• I try to bring together views from all across the Christian community, and on some topics, the non-Christians too. The presence of a link or quote doesn't mean I agree with or endorse every belief of the site or person linked to. Some of the sites are there just because we need to know what's going on. To be clear, I absolutely do not put the color of my skin or anyone else's above the call of Christ. I just believe that my view of the color of human skin and my views on other cultures in some way reflects my answer to the call of Christ.

That will never be my intent because I know solid theology is extremely important, because that's how we learn about God. I'll do my best here and on the show to offer the best, but I count on you to be Berean, for my sake and yours, and the glory of God in Christ Jesus.

The Sumberging Church Conversation?

Posted by marklaroi on July 22nd, 2008

Love this post at Steve Camp’s blog “Camp on this”. The sad thing is that many of these descriptors actually happen!

Top ten signs that you are visiting
a Submerging Church:
10.) The usher asks if you prefer the smoking or non-smoking section
9.) Regular attendees earn cash bonus points to local brewery
8.) Sunday School has been replaced by contemplative-walk-abouts
7.) Baptismal tank has a wave-maker machine

Finish the list at Camp On This.

Take the $10,000 Creflo Dollar challenge!

Posted by marklaroi on July 18th, 2008
[Chris] Rosebrough was responding to Creflo Dollar’s claim that the rich young ruler (Matt 19:16-26) actually went and sold his possessions and as a result God blessed him 100 fold.Rosebrough believes that Creflo Dollar is twisting God’s word and completely making stuff up. Therefore, Rosebrough is offering $10,000 to the first person who can provide Biblical proof from the New Testament that supports Creflo’s claims about the rich young ruler.

I don’t think he’s gonna be losing any money. Here’s the broadcast, h/t CRN.

To have two mommies or two daddies

Posted by marklaroi on July 14th, 2008

As the media interest in the baby bearing “man” reached a fever pitch, I kept being nagged by a question at the back of my mind. “Why didn’t the partner who plays the woman role outwardly carry the baby?”

“I actually opted not to do anything to my reproductive organs because I wanted to have a child one day. I see pregnancy as a process, and it doesn’t define who I am,” Beatie told Oprah Winfrey in April.

“I feel it’s not a male or female desire to have a child. It’s a human need. I’m a person and I have the right to have a biological child,” he said.

So she sees pregnancy as something that doesn’t define who she is? The very fact that she had to keep her uterus did some very clear defining on its own. It brings the situation to “I wanna be a man- mostly.” [I had a medical detail here that I decided is just better left at the original story. Be aware that while not tremendously detailed, it does contain some specific facts you may not want to know.] Such was the desire of the individuals to fill their needs, but to what degree will they go to fill that child’s needs? What about the multitude of questions she’ll be asking and need to answer. Dr. Al Mohler weighs in here.

Her innate desire to have a father will have its effect on her life, and if the last million years of human record bears any weight at all in the argument, her self-esteem, confidence, and idea of a mate will be sorely defective. That doesn’t seem to be of primary importance to the “parents” though. They’ve gotten what they wanted. We can only pray they don’t end up getting what they’re asking for however because that will be decidedly less pleasant.

I was looking for information on actress Sara Gilbert because she’s a good actress but since she doesn’t resemble her sister Melissa at all I was curious about their familial relationship. While I was not really surprised to learn she lives a lesbian lifestyle, it was this bit of information at the bottom of her Wikipedia entry (also reported by more reputable sites) which prompted my thoughts on the children:

She has been in an openly lesbian relationship with Allison Adler since 2002. They have a son born in October 2004, and a daughter born on August 2, 2007. Allison carried the couple’s son and Gilbert carried their daughter.

One carried one child, the other gave birth to the other! Kids aren’t stupid, and these kids were just placed purposely into a situation more confusing than any of which I can recall. Yet, the adults got what they wanted. Who will teach their son to be a man and their daughter what kind of man to choose? A pale substitute.

Because these kids were purposely born into fatherless homes.

*no, “Brangelina” aren’t doing her/their kids any favors either. A married mom and dad is the intended and best setting into which to bring children, no matter who doesn’t like that fact. It makes a statement of commitment that can’t be found any other way and this does make a difference to the kids.

How good is that song of praise?

Posted by marklaroi on July 14th, 2008

This is something that comes up pretty often when you talk abotu praise songs. Is the song you’re singing actually all that good, or does it just feel good? Here’s an example of what I mean. This morning I was listening to Donnie McClurkin’s “We Fall Down” which was largely borrowed from a Bob Carlisle release. Yesterday in the fellowship we sang Chris Tomlin’s “We Fall Down”. Here are the lyrics courtesy of LyricsProvider and LyricsDownload in order for you to do a side-by-side comparison.

Bob Carlisle version:

Cursing every step of the way, he bore a heavy load
to the market ten miles away, the journey took its toll
and every day he passed a monastery’s high cathedral walls
and it made his life seem meaningless and small
And he wondered how it would be to live in such a place
to be warm, well fed and at peace; to shut the world away
So when he saw a priest who walked, for once, beyond the iron gate
he said, tell me of your life inside the place…
and the priest replied…
We fall down, we get up
we fall down, we get up
we fall down, we get up
and the saints are just the sinners
who fall down and get up
Disappointment followed him home; he’d hoped for so much more
but he saw himself in a light he had never seen before
Cause if the priest who fell could find the grace of god to be enough
then there must be some hope for the rest of us
there must be some hope left for us
We fall down, we get up
we fall down, we get up
we fall down, we get up
and the saints are just the sinners
who fall down and get up

Donnie McClurkin version:

We fall down
but we get up
we fall down
but we get up
we fall down
but we get up
For a saint is just a sinner who fell down
and got up
(repeat)
Get back up again (6x)
For a saint is just a sinner who fell down
and got up

Chris Tomlin version:

We fall down
we lay our crowns
at the feet of jesus
the greatness of
mercy and love
at the feet of jesus
we cry holy, holy, holy
we cry holy, holy, holy
we cry holy, holy, holy
is the lamb
we fall down
we lay our crowns
at the feet of jesus
the greatness of
mercy and love
at the feet of jesus
we cry holy, holy, holy
we cry holy, holy, holy
we cry holy, holy, holy
is the lamb
we cry holy, holy, holy
we cry holy, holy, holy
we cry holy, holy, holy
is the lamb

While none of the three are necessarily great repositories of theological education, there is a degree of separation between them

Now McDonald’s stands for homosexuality?

Posted by marklaroi on July 11th, 2008

Oh come on, is it really necessary for a fast food chain to become active on the part of a particular sexual deviancy? This one falls under the familiar crying towel of “he hate me”.

“McDonald’s has decided to adopt the ‘hate’ theme used by gay activist groups for years,” said the AFA alert.

“Mr. Whitman has intentionally avoided addressing the reason for the boycott. This boycott is not about hiring gays or how gay employees are treated. It is about McDonald’s choosing to put the full weight of their corporation behind promoting their agenda,” the AFA alert said.

McDonald’s CEO Jim Skinner said the company will promote issues they approve, the AFA said.

“Being a socially responsible organization is a fundamental part of who we are. We have an obligation to use our size and resources to make a difference in the world … and we do,” Skinner was quoted as saying.

Personally I’m not one for boycotting a secular company for religious reasons or boycotts based on biased treatment unless a particular people group or group of individuals is being abused (this would also extend to animal cruelty), but it sure helped bring out the truth in this case. I limit my fast food intake because that’s the intelligent thing to do. I love my occasional treat of greasy foods and won’t deny that to anyone. Frankly though, if it’s the choice of one over another, a little less fast food in my body can only help. ;)

Stop using those *&^%*%# words!!

Posted by marklaroi on July 9th, 2008

But mostly, be careful of the spirit behind them. This post I made in December of 2007 has been getting a lot of hits lately, so guess what: I’m reprinting it! Enjoy.

————————————————————————–

I’ll tell ya’, I’ve been on the receiving end of a surprising number of comments from Christians trying really hard to justify their foul language. I’ve even talked with pastors who let profanities fly on a regular basis. By and large, each of these individuals showed themselves to be people I’d not be quick to  hold up as examples of Christian living for a new-born Christian.

So what’s the big deal about keeping so much control over the tongue? ‘Cause when the Holy becomes foul, it ain’t Holy no more.

A friend pointed me to this sermon on the topic of swearing and foul language with a hat tip to Christian Research Network.

Among the many heinous sins for which this nation is grown infamous, perhaps there is no one more crying, but withal more common, than the abominable custom of profane swearing and cursing. Our streets abound with persons of all degrees and qualities, who are continually provoking the holy one of Israel to anger, by their detestable oaths and blasphemies: and our very children, “out of whose mouths,” the psalmist observes in his days, “was perfected praise,” are now grown remarkable for the quite opposite ill quality of cursing and swearing. …This cannot but be a melancholy prospect, for every sincere and honest minister of Jesus Christ, to view his fellow-creatures in; and such as will put him on contriving some means to prevent the spreading at least of so growing an evil; knowing that the Lord (without repentance) will assuredly visit for these things. But alas! what can he do? Public animadversions are so neglected amongst us, that we seldom find a common swearer punished as the laws direct. And as for private admonition, men are now so hardened through the deceitfulness of sin, that to give them sober and pious advice, and to show them the evil of their doings, is but like “casting pearls before swine; they only turn again and rend you.”

Read the sermon. Really.

I stopped by Circuit City this morning to pick up an ink cartridge for my printer. I have a refill kit but I think I goofed when I used it ’cause the Black ink isn’t printing properly, and MAYBE ’cause the nozzle is coated in ink. I thought starting over might be a good move. Anyway, while I was there I came across one of the funniest movies I’ve seen in a long time, “Shaolin Soccer”. It was discounted so I had to get it. It’s pretty clean regarding foul language or sexuality and if you like the old school karate flicks, this one’s gonna make you smile!

I read an article in the Reader’s Digest about a woman who built a multi-million dollar business by plugging the holes in the shoes known as “Crocs” with various cute buttons and what have you. Here’s the thing: each person is more than entitled to their own tastes, but I cannot understand why anyone would want a pair of these shoes. I remember when I first saw them and thought it was a joke, then I’d see them and just thought it was a popular joke. These shoes look like someone cut the back off a little rubber bucket, poked holes in them and put them on the market! I truly thought they were an import from some temperate country where it rains all the time and people wear them for their good drainage and also so that they don’t get the shoes that they actually like wet. Maybe it’s just me. Seems they may be good for folks with diabetes though.

Heard about Senator McCain’s cigarette joke?

Presidential candidate John McCain, who once sang in jest about bombing Iran, on Tuesday reacted to a report of rising U.S. cigarette exports to the country by saying it may be “a way of killing ‘em.”

Yes, he meant it as a joke, but that isn’t the kind of joke I want to hear from a presidential candidate or anyone over the age of 20 who by then should have developed a self-censoring button. Not funny.
